I lead Responsible AI evaluation at the BBC, drawing on more than twenty years of leadership across technology, media, research and policy.
The thread through my work is evidence, and the judgement needed to act on it. I came to AI evaluation after two decades as an editor, journalist and policy consultant, and I still build the evaluation tools I use. As AI changes how people find and judge information, I'm interested in what organisations owe the public when they adopt it.
I'm lead author of the BBC/EBU News Integrity in AI Assistants Toolkit, which grew out of a study across 22 public-service broadcasters in 14 languages. Before that I helped lead BBC Monitoring's move into data and AI.
As an editor for nineteen years, and as a writer for The Guardian, openDemocracy and Le Monde diplomatique, I decided what was well enough sourced to publish. At BBC Monitoring I analysed the Middle East and North Africa from Arabic, French and English sources.
As a consultant to UN agencies, the WHO and the European Commission, I turned broad goals into workable guidance. For UN DESA I led a year-long project and wrote its official guidance on partnering in Small Island Developing States.
